Finding a remodeling architect

If you have made the decision to remodel your house you are going to want to find an architect. If you really want to you can design it yourself but you will almost certainly get a better result if you use a professional. Finding a good architect for your remodel is not all that hard to do if you follow a few basic steps.

The first thing that you need to do in order to find an architect is to compile a list of them that you are going to research further. The best way to do this is to ask for referrals from people that you know who have used an architect recently. If you know anybody who has had their home remodeled ask them about the architect that they used and if they were happy with them. If you really don't know anybody who can give you a referral you are going to have to use the internet to find prospective architects. There are lots of forums that you can use for this.

Once you have a list of architects that you are considering you are going to want to call them and get some basic information from them. At this stage you interested in things like their education and experience. You will also want to talk about their design philosophy. Ideally they will be able to show you pictures of projects that they have worked on previously. At this stage you are just narrowing down the choices of the architects that you are going to consider further.

Once you have narrowed down your choices to about three architects that you like you will be want to actually meet with them in person. At this stage you are going to want to have more detailed questions to ask them. You should also have a pretty good idea of what you are looking for in the design. From this the architect should be able to give you a quote on the cost of the project. Once you have quotes from these three architects and you have interviewed them you should be able to choose the one that you think is best for your project.

The last step in choosing an architect is to actually do a background check on the architect that you have chosen. You will want to check with the architect's board to make sure that they have the licenses that they are supposed to have. You are also going to want to check with the state's attorney general's office to see if any complaints have been lodged against the architect. It is also a good idea to check with the Better Business Bureau. Lastly you should be able to get some references from the architect that you can call and ask about the work that was done.
